The Proper Way to Wash Your Hair
Washing your hair may seem like one of the easiest things when it comes to hair care, but improper cleansing can be damaging. When it comes to shampooing, there are several things you can do to keep your mane as healthy as possible.
- The right cleanser: Start with a good quality, sulfate-free shampoo. You’ll find many different brands and prices to choose from, so there’s no one perfect cleanser for everybody. Make sure it provides what your hair type and texture need, whether it’s extra moisture, a light hit of protein or volumizing properties.
- Keep your head up: If you have a salon sink in your home, congratulations! It’s a wonderful way to shampoo your hair. Since most women don’t own a professional appliance, a shower (with detachable shower head, if possible) is the next best thing. While you can bend forward at the waist and shampoo your hair in a regular sink, it gets hard to completely rinse away suds and avoid tangling when your tresses are very long. Shampooing in the shower keeps your hair in one direction (vertical) so it’s less prone to tangling. Don’t pile all your hair on top of your head while lathering.
- Put those fingernails away: Much of the focus while cleansing is on your scalp. Treat it gently by rubbing with the balls of your fingers. Do not rake over your scalp with your nails! Rub in small, circular patterns to lift dirt and product buildup. Instead of vigorously rubbing lather into the length of your tresses, let the downward motion of the water work suds through.
- Section if needed: For long and/or thick hair, sectioning may be required not only to ensure that all your tresses get clean, but that you rinse away all lather. Not adequately rinsing your hair can lead to dryness.
