Your choice of shampoo can actually make a difference in the overall health of your hair. Many common shampoos contain harsh sulfates that can strip your hair. Take a look at the ingredients in your current shampoo. If it contains any of the following, it could be damaging your hair:
- Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- TEA Laureth Sulfate
- TEA Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
These types of shampoos should be used for clarifying only. A clarifying shampoo should be used once a month, if at all. Using a clarifying shampoo is not necessary but can be done to remove excess dirt or buildup.
The best type of shampoo to use is one that is gentle and moisturizing. A good example of a gentle shampoo is the Essentious Exonerate Shampoo. However, at a minimum, you should not use shampoos with harsh sulfates as your regular shampoo.
The following sulfates are gentle and will not damage your hair:
- Polyoxethylene Fatty Alcohols
- PEG 80
- Sorbitan Laurate
- Decyl Polyglucose
- Cocamidoprpyl Betaine
- Sodium Myreth Sulfate
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
