Section One – Taking Care
of Your Hair
Washing
Your choice of shampoo is very important. Shampoos containing harsh
sulfates strip the hair and should be avoided. Check the ingredients
list on your shampoo to find out if they are damaging.
Do not use shampoos that contain the
following sulfates:
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
TEA Laureth Sulfate
TEA Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
The following sulfates are gentle and
will not damage your hair:
Polyoxethylene Fatty Alcohols
PEG 80
Sorbitan Laurate
Decyl Polyglucose
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Sodium Myreth Sulfate
A clarifying shampoo should be used once
a month. Your clarifying shampoo should be different from your regular
shampoo. It will contain harsher sulfates than those in your regular
shampoo. Clarifying is important to ensure that your protein and moisturizing
treatments are effective.
Protein Treatments
Protein should be replaced in regular intervals and after any chemical
service even if your hair is not noticeably damaged. Hair can be severely
damaged from chemical processing (perms, relaxers, color, bleaching,
highlights, etc.) This is because these processes remove protein from
the hair. If this part of your hair care regimen is overlooked, the
results can be devastating.
How often should you use protein treatments?
Determining the appropriate intervals
for applying protein treatments will heavily depend on the condition
of your hair as well as your regular hair care practices. For damaged
hair, protein treatments should be used 2-3 times a week. To keep
your hair soft, moisturizing treatments should be used on alternating
days and immediately following the protein treatment. For example,
you could use a protein treatment on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Then you would a moisturizing treatment alone on Tuesday, Thursday,
and Saturday. For healthy hair, a protein treatment is probably only
needed once weekly.
How should the treatment be applied?
There are two types of protein treatments
that can be used. The first is the kind that will be washed out, and
the second is a leave-in treatment. For wash-out protein treatments,
they should be applied to towel dried hair and covered with a shower
cap. Most of these treatments require 30 to 60 minutes to elapse before
rinsing. You should refer to the directions of your specific treatment.
Another way to do a protein treatment is to apply it to dry, unwashed
hair. Leave the treatment in all day, then rinse out. Follow with
a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. For leave-in treatments, you
would follow your normal shampoo and conditioner with a leave-in protein
treatment. This is not rinsed.
Moisturizing Treatments
Using heat appliances and chemical processes
remove moisture from your hair that needs to be replaced. If your
hair feels dry, you need to replace lost moisture. Deep conditioning
should always be done to the ends of the hair. If a deep conditioner
is applied all over, it should be followed with a shampoo (not clarifying).
How often should you use a moisturizing
treatment?
A regular light moisturizing treatment
should be used following every shampoo. For very dry and damaged hair,
a deep conditioner should be used once weekly. Also, if you use protein
treatments often, you may need to deep condition (those that require
a shower cap under a heated dryer) also.
How should the treatment be applied?
Shampoo, then apply the treatment (conditioner)
all over and cover with a shower cap. The treatment should be left
in 20-60 minutes. For fine hair, the treatment should be rinsed, followed
by a shampoo. For thicker hair, it is not necessary to use shampoo
following the treatment.

Emergency Hair Rescue
Severely damaged hair will need special attention to drastically improve
its condition. Use the following regimen for two weeks before continuing
with the methods for washing and conditioning described in this report.
1. Wash with a clarifying shampoo, then
towel dry.
2. Mix protein treatment and moisturizing treatment, then apply all
over hair.
3. Cover hair with shower cap and leave in for 30 minutes with heat.
Heat should be applied with either a hooded dryer (best) or by wrapping
with hot towels while the treatment is in the hair.
4. Remove the shower cap without rinsing.
5. Blow dry the hair (without combing or disturbing it) until almost
dry, then rinse.
6. Towel dry hair, and then apply the protein treatment only.
7. Leave the protein treatment in hair overnight, then rinse.
8. Shampoo and condition as usual.
