Prenatal Vitamins and Hair GrowthPrenatal vitamins are often associated wtih hair growth because many women's hair will grow much longer while they are pregnant. However, soon after the baby is born, their hair will return to normal or begin to shed more than usual. Prenatal vitamins are packed with many nutrients that are beneficial for hair growth, however, this drastic change in growth patterns is not completely due to the vitamins. When a woman becomes pregnant, her body produces more estrogen than usual. This estrogen rich environment locks the hair into the growth phase allowing the hair to grow much longer. After delivery, these hormones gradually return to their pre-pregnancy state and the hairs start going into the resting and shedding phases of the hair growth cycle. At any given time about 90% of your hair is in the growth phase. However, growth phases can vary from 2 to 6 years and are gentically determined. A person who's hair grows for 6 years before entering the shedding phase will grow hair 3 times as long as someone who's hair grows for only 2 years before entering the shedding phase. When pregnant, all of the hairs that would have normally entered into the shedding phase are locked into the growth phase. This makes hair grow longer and fuller. So other than pregnancy and genetics, what can I do to get longer faster growing hair? Hair Vitamins with MSM can also be used to get faster hair growth. Methylsolfonylmethane, or MSM, is a natural form of organic sulfonyl sulfur. It is found in many foods, especially most raw fruits and green vegetables. MSM provides sulfur that is required for healthy collagen and keratin. These are very important for healthy hair. MSM repairs and creates healthy cells thus allowing hair to grow more rapidly and achieve greater lengths. It has been proven to increase the hair growth cycle and therefore overall length. MSM is not present in prenatal vitamins.
